There are many multimodal texts
that can be infiltrated within the classroom environment for both primary and
secondary age groups. Some examples of these digital texts include Youtube
which has a variety of different modalities. Youtube can be used for all age
groups and its purpose in this example is to teach students how to do fractions
in a fast interactive way and is beneficial for those have difficulty. It can be
useful for visual learners, as they are able to see what they are doing and
gives them a better understanding than those who are auditory learners.
In this digital text, there is a variety of different modalities that are used to give the viewer an understanding about fractions. The video displays the linguistic element combined with the visual and audio elements making it a multimodal system as there are “different modes of communication working together without one being dominant,” (Burke and Rowsell, 2009, p.106). The linguistic modality uses written language to write out step by step how to do fractions for the viewers to see. The visual aspect is also used by having a “moving image,” (Anstey & Bull, 2006, p.25) to show what they are talking about, and this can be very beneficial to those who are visual learners. The audio aspect uses “sound effects,” (Anstey & Bull, 2006, p.25) of their voice to communicate with the viewer which helps them to explain what they are talking about.
